He might like Rebuild a loooooot more! I mean it’s a bit more plot-driven than character-driven (especially 3.33) and the characters are all around more functional human beings so he will likely prefer it to NGE. I think he should definitely watch EoE… I consider it like, episode 27 of the series. I mean episodes 25 and 26 are not exactly a satisfying end (we just watched them last night and my boyfriend was like, ‘is it too late to send angry letters to Anno?’

SRSLY THOUGH the whole point is the characters are flawed???? ie the writing team is fucking brilliant??? I completely love Shinji because apart from being a total bishounen he is all the worst parts of myself inside a creepy robot so what is not to love

He’s not useless, but its hard to say he isn’t whiny. He gets better in the series, but it feels like every step forward he makes, he goes backwards as far.

Yes and no… by the end, I think depending on how you interpret it, he has sort of overcome his biggest personal obstacles. Even episode 1 Shinji to Shinji by the time Asuka shows up is a big increase of confidence and ability to open up, I think. Even if he backtracks on his progress, the progress is still there… and I think that is very human.

As to Shinji being whiny, well, of course he is. He doesn’t have a mother, his father has abandoned him, he is almost certainly dealing with clinical depression, most likely PTSD, and has to pilot a giant trauma machine for the uh, fate of the planet. So. I’d probably cry a lot too. I probably would kill myself before getting in that Eva, so Shinji is stronger than me. So, my point is, people complaining about Shinji whining is just toooootally missing the entire point of the entire series.

Yeah, my boyfriend just found Shinji to be a ‘useless whiny little bitch’ and thought everyone else was pretty mopey and useless too. He thinks it’s ‘not that great’ and I just have a bad case of ‘nostalgia goggles’ :(

I watched 6 episodes with my boyfriend last night and he seemed to really like it, and is currently in the “what are angels why do they have to be 14 whaaaaat” phase and coming up with theories so, so far characters are secondary.

I convinced my boyfriend to watch it! :D He didn’t like it D:

tbh I have a feeling my boyfriend might get frustrated at the characters, and he will definitely have a giant problem with Misato and Shinji’s relationship, and probably all the naked Rei will creep him out despite my trying to explain that there’s a cultural difference with regards to nudity (and I mean the shock factor of it all is there for a reason toooooo). *shrug* the heavy-handed Christian stuff will be hit or miss. 

It was one of the Animes recommend to me as a thing that I would like, maybe I will watch it. Too

DO IT you will probably gleam a lot more meaning from the not-subtle-at-all Christian references.

NGE is all kinds of fucked up and it’s so so wonderful. I recommend self-medicating with Sailor Moon and Pokemon along the way to keep yourself together; that is what I did. And DON’T watch it in English… I made that post about how/where to watch it a couple days ago~

mmm yes, my friend had the strawberry one and it was great! I also tried the melon but I wasn’t a fan (unsurprising, I’m not really into melons). I think the plain one is my favourite so far though. saranghaeyo, milkis!
